Giovanni Salassa

PhD student at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ)

Research topic: "Preparation of new multinuclear salphen structures and the examination of their selfassembly, photophysical and catalytic properties"

Giovanni Salassa obtained his BSc from the Universitá degli Studi di Torino in 2007, presenting a thesis concerning Hydrogen bonding studied using Solid State NMR techniques. Afterward he commenced his MSc in the same university spending one year in the laboratories of Prof. R. Gobetto, where he studied the photoactivation of ruthenium complexes for biomedical applications using photophysical and DFT techniques. In 2009 after defending his MSc he began his PhD in the group of Prof. A. W. Kleij at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ). His research focuses on the preparation of new multinuclear salphen structures and the examination of their selfassembly, photophysical and catalytic properties.

The Nobel Campus organised by Universitat Rovira i Virgili offers an exciting and unrivalled occasion to meet six Nobel prizewinning professors at the same time, as well as offering the possibility to attend unique lectures about their chemistry. During the four days of the Nobel Campus I am excited about the prospect of spending time with the six Noble prizewinners and having the possibility to share different experiences and to know more about their extraordinary scientific careers. To be selected to present my own research work at this level is an honour and I am also hoping that some of the discussion will give further inspiration to both my current and future research.
