Albert Sánchez

Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Barcelona

Research topics: Solid phase synthesis of oligonucleotides (DNA, RNA and modified sequences), PNA and eptides; solution synthesis of building blocks, conjugates and ligands

Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry (University of Barcelona), with 1 year at the University of Manchester (Erasmus student). Master and PhD thesis in Organic Chemistry at the University of Barcelona on the topic: "Maleimido-oligonucleotides: synthesis and applications".In addition to some publications, my research has allowed a patent to be filed and licensed to a US company. Development of a novel strategy for the solid phase synthesis of maleimido−oligonucleotides (useful in conjugation reactions), and a new method for oligonucleotide circularization using the thiol-maleimide click reaction.

I'm really interested in therapeuthic strategies based on the use of synthethic oligonucleotides and epigenetics. Attendance at the "Campus Nobel Prize in Chemistry" organized by the CEICS (URV) is really a unique opportunity for the young researcher who wants to learn chemistry and about the role of chemists. So far I have only attended national and international conferences where I have presented my results and I had the opportunity to discuss with other researchers. I am looking forward to participating in the Campus, where I hope to meet junior and senior researchers and share concerns and impressions both scientific and non-scientific.

Meeting, hearing and interacting with Nobel Laureates in Chemistry is an occasion to learn from the experience gained after a life of research. I find it fascinating to know their opinions on topics such as what might be the ideal training of a postdoc, what are the benefits of specializing in one subject, what is the influence of serendipity in research activities, when to give up after negative results, how they managed success (the Nobel Prize), how do they integrate personal and professional lives, etc.
